The OverClocked ReMix community has done it again. Shell Shocked is a new, collaborative album based around remixes of the 16-bit era's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games Turtles in Time (SNES) and The Hyperstone Heist (Sega Genesis).
The project's director, Kyle Crouse, describes his vision for the 33-artist, 22-track collection: "When conceptualizing Shell Shocked, I wanted to capture what I had imagined as a hard rock sound in the music of the original game. The Turtles themselves have always been steeped in the culture of the 80's and early 90's and have a bit of that era's playful cheesiness, so I wanted to reflect that in an album that had a hard edge but didn't take itself too seriously."
"Despite having a heavy rock and metal influence, the album is packed with variety, with arrangement styles ranging from power metal, punk, progressive synth, glam metal, jazz fusion, blues rock, funk, and even some Vanilla Ice-inspired rap rock."
It's fun hearing these tracks again, and even if it's been a long time since you got your hands on these old 16-bit beat-em-ups, you might be surprised to find more familiarity here than you expect. In any case, this would be a fun collection of music to rock out to, with or without an infusion of turtle power. And of course, in the usual OC ReMix tradition, the album is totally free to download! Think of this as the last nice memory of the Ninja Turtles you'll be allowed to have before the awful Michael Bay movie comes out.
